St. Louis County Assessor candidate Jake Zimmerman today announced his plan to help St. Louis homeowners get fair and accurate home assessments.

Zimmerman, a Democratic state representative, says he can't control property taxes, but if elected he will work to control unfair practices like drive-by assessments.

"This office has very little control over what the taxes are people pay at the end of the day, " Zimmerman said, "But this office has a lot of control making sure everybody is treated right and making sure no one group, no one interest, no one set of the favored few are getting a better deal than everybody else."

Zimmerman is running against Republican L.K. "Chip" Wood, a real-estate executive, on April 5. It's the first time the county assessor will be determined by voters, rather than appointed by the County Executive.
