All lanes of eastbound I-64 from Jefferson to the Poplar Street Bridge will close tonight at 8 p.m. and will reopen by 3 p.m. Sunday in time for the U2 concert at Busch Stadium.
Lanes in both directions of the Poplar Street Bridge will close beginning at 7 p.m. for deck repairs. The bridge will also reopen at 3 p.m. on Sunday.
Metro also tweeted that, on Sunday night, after the U2 concert, "Metro will continue MetroLink service until all downtown stations are cleared."
According to a press release from the Missouri Department of Transportation:
- “Two left lanes on the eastbound Poplar Street Bridge will also close starting at 8 p.m., Friday evening until 3 p.m. Sunday.
- Two right lanes on the westbound Poplar Street Bridge will close starting at 7 p.m., Friday evening until 3 p.m., Sunday. Crews will perform bridge deck repairs and painting work.
- MoDot strongly urges motorists to use alternate routes to get into downtown, such as the Eads, McKinley or Martin Luther King bridges or to use the Interstate 270/255.”
Kara Price with MoDOT says work on I-64 has to be done this weekend to stay on schedule:
“Because this is part of an ongoing process to maintain the bridges along I-64,” said Price. “We are trying to strengthen them to be able to withstand an earthquake. So this takes several years to do, but that’s what these recent closures along I-64 have been part of.”
MoDOT is also encouraging motorists to use I-70 or I-55 as alternate routes.
Various lanes on both eastbound and westbound Interstate 44 at Jamieson Avenue will also be closed this weekend.
Price says the lanes will be closed from 7 p.m tonight until 5 a.m. Monday.
“Crews are going to be removing the driving surface, which is the bridge deck on the Jamieson Bridge to begin the replacement project,” said price.
The Jamieson Bridge closed on Wednesday. Motorists are urged to use Interstate 44 to Hampton to detour around the bridge closure.
