A central Missouri man who served 14 years of a life sentence for his mother's death before his conviction was overturned says he wants to get back to normal.
Fifty-five-year-old Dale Helmig spent Monday looking for a job and visiting a sick relative while still absorbing the news that he won't face a new murder trial. He was convicted in 1996 of killing Norma Helmig in 1993.
Helmig's been free on bond since December 2010 after a northwest Missouri judge ruled that he "was a victim of a fundamental miscarriage of justice." Two state appeals courts have upheld that decision.
As we told you yesterday, in February of this year, Attorney General Chris Koster appealed McElwain's decision, which was upheld. Koster appealed to the state Supreme Court, which refused to hear the case.
The Osage County prosecutor said Sunday she was dismissing the case but did not explain her reasons.
