Cardinals win Game 1 of World Series

The Cardinals claimed Game 1 of the World Series last night at Busch Stadium against the Texas Rangers.

Pinch-hitter Allen Craig drove in the go-ahead run to give the Cardinals a 3-2 win. Lance Berkman put the Cardinals ahead with a two-run single in the fourth, and Rangers catcher Mike Napoli tied the game with a home run the next inning. Pitcher Chris Carpenter got the win, allowing five hits in six innings. Allen Craig says it worked out to have Carpenter on the mound during the first game.

"He's our leader on the team, on the mound. He's really set the tone this postseason, and having him have the ball and going down there and getting strikes and bringing his emotions to the game," said Craig. "In the first game, it was huge for us."

Mo. House to continue special legislative session today

Missouri House members are returning to the state Capitol to continue their special legislative session. Today's agenda included economic development legislation and a resolution urging Congress to support full funding for the F/A-18 jet fighter made by Boeing Co. in St. Louis.

Earlier this month, the House approved a different resolution urging Congress to provide full funding for the Lockheed Martin F-35 Joint Strike Fighter, which is built in Texas. That resolution noted that more than 500 Missourians work for companies that supply the Lockheed Martin program. Gov. Jay Nixon criticized the resolution and said it was not the position of the state of Missouri.

Fifth case of listeriosis in Mo. linked to tainted Colo. cantaloupe

A fifth case of listeriosis in Missouri has been linked to contaminated cantaloupe from Colorado.  The state Department of Health and Senior Services says it was notified of the confirmation Wednesday by the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The latest case is the third to be confirmed in Missouri's northwestern district. The others occurred in eastern and southwestern Missouri. All five of the people sickened by the cantaloupe were hospitalized. One of those was a 94-year-old who later died, but medical officials determined the death was not caused by listeria bacteria.

Most healthy adults can consume listeria with no ill effects. Symptoms of listeriosis include fever, muscle aches and gastrointestinal problems.
