Gov. Jay Nixon says voters should decide whether to make I-70 a toll road in Missouri.

Gov. Jay Nixon says voters should decide whether to install tolls along Interstate 70, though he would not say if he supports the idea.

The Missouri Department of Transportation has sought the authority to form a partnership with private contractors to recover the costs of rebuilding Interstate 70 by using tolls.  Its chief, Kevin Keith, has said that could allow the department to avoid taking the issue to voters.

Nixon was asked about tolls at an afternoon press conference following an annual media event. He says the state should consider a wide variety of ideas for its transportation system.

MoDOT has three options for rebuilding the interstate, with a price tag between $2 billion and $6 billion.
