The city of St. Louis announced plans Friday that it will be replace the Kingshighway viaduct between Vandeventer Avenue and Southwest Avenue/Shaw Blvd. next summer.

The current viaduct was built in 1936 and city officials say it’s in poor condition.

The city has completed preliminary engineering plans.

The new viaduct will have three lanes in each direction and 5-foot sidewalks on each side separated by the roadways by concrete barriers.

Construction is scheduled to begin in the summer of 2013 and take about a year to complete.

The city is holding a public hearing on the project at St. Louis City Hall next Wednesday at 4 p.m.
