Missouri is fourth-worst in the nation for strokes

New data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention show the number of adults suffering a stroke in Missouri has jumped in the last six years.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch says the 2010 data – the latest available – show that 3.6 percent of adults in Missouri reported having a stroke that year. That was the fourth-highest rate in the nation – only Alabama, Mississippi and Oklahoma were worse. Six years ago, Missouri was ninth, with a rate of 3.2 percent.

A local stroke specialist told the Post-Dispatch that Missouri’s high rate of smoking and obesity contributed to the increase in the number of strokes.

Protestors arrested in downtown after scuffling with police, spraying graffiti

St. Louis police arrested ten protestors last night for spray-painting graffiti on a downtown bank, and scuffling with police and property owners.

The arrests took place around 10:30 p.m.,  just after the end of the St. Louis Cardinals game.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch says a bicycle officer suffered a minor hand injury when he confronted the protestors. A property manager at the Fifth Third Bank was also assaulted. Police say there were no other injuries.

The Post-Dispatch says the protestors were demonstrating against police violence. One participant said the graffiti was the action of individuals, and that organizers did not condone illegal acts.

Busch streaker says he 'lost a bet'

The streaker who ran onto the field during last night's Phillies-Cardinals game at Busch Stadium says he did it because he lost a bet.

22-year-old Collin Grundstrom of Jefferson City spent the night in jail after running onto the field naked before the start of the seventh inning. He was charged with violating two city ordinances - being a spectator on the playing field, and lewd and lascivious behavior.

The Cardinals lost the Phillies 10-9. Cardinals starter Jake Westbrook surrendered six runs in less than three innings of work.
