Judge: East St. Louis School Board can stay, for now

A St. Clair County Circuit Court judge has approved a preliminary restraining order for a group of recently ousted East St. Louis School Board members.

The East St. Louis School Board was taken over by the Illinois State Board of Education June 21. A group of the East St. Louis Board members then sued, saying that  that the state's move was unconstitutional. They also said the move infringed on what they called the "fundamental right to vote" and that state failed to allow an evidentiary hearing.

With the preliminary restraining order granted, the East St. Louis Board is able to stay, for now. Judge Stephen R. Rice will now consider a request for a permanent restraining order. The next court date has not been set.
