#FreesePlease: Twitter campaign boosts Cardinal to All-Star Game

St. Louis Public Radio

Updated 3:38 p.m:

It looks like David Freese is a winner in the Final Vote campaign and will be going to the All-Star Game.

MLB tweeted this afternoon that Freese was the National League winner, with Yu Darvish winning the American League contest.

Here's what Freese told MLB.com:

"It's St. Louis," Freese said of the huge support he received from Redbird Nation. "They love Cardinal baseball." Freese had said that being reunited with La Russa was the biggest part of the honor, should fans give it to him. And they did. "For me, it's not about going to the All-Star Game," Freese explained. "It's about playing for Tony La Russa one more time."

MLB.com also said that the whole Twitter-based effort for all of the players involved "drew a four-hour sustained average of 3,000 tweets per minute during the voting period."

Original Story:

Major League Baseball is taking a social media step in this year's All-Star Game Final Vote - and hometown Cardinal David Freese is one of the players that could benefit.

MLB says it will be counting all tweets which use the hashtag #FreesePlease today, until 3 p.m. CT, as votes for the Cards' third baseman.

Freese isn't alone in the Final Vote competition - he's up against three other players in the National League.

So, if you're so inclined, tweet away. We'll clearly be participating - just look at our *office in this story's image.

*OK. So our office isn't set up quite in this shrine-like fashion, but we did stage this photo using items in our newsroom. Yes, that is a David Freese bobblehead doll.
