The sponsors of St. Elizabeth Academy have announced "with great sadness" that the school will close at the end of this school year.
St. Elizabeth Academy is a private, Catholic, girls-only preparatory high school in the Tower Grove East neighborhood of St. Louis.
“For more than a century, St. Elizabeth Academy has made a positive difference in the lives of thousands of young women, carrying out our mission to develop the successful woman inside each girl," Sister Susan Borgel, CPPS, president of the school, said in a statement on their website. "That is why this was such a heartbreaking decision. However after more than three years of discussion, intense research, input, and prayer we see no other way."
She also cited "declining enrollment, the increasing deficit, and the cost of maintaining the aging physical plant" as reasons behind the decision to close.
The Sisters of the Most Precious Blood of O’Fallon, Mo. sponsor the school, which was founded in 1882.
