A Final Goodbye To Stan The Man

Legendary St. Louis Cardinal Stan Musial was remembered for both his Hall of Fame career and deep connection to the city during a funeral mass on Saturday.

An at times emotional Bob Costas said Stan the Man was a brilliant baseball player, to be sure.  But, Costas said, that’s only part of his legacy.

“Our greatest ballplayer, sure, but also our friend, our neighbor, and that is why the bond between this player and this city is unique and lasting,” Costas Said.

Bishop Richard Stika of Knoxville, Tenn. said Musial was a rare mix of skill and humility.

“Since the early 1940s, the good people of St. Louis have witnessed the remarkable story of an individual who was blessed by great skill, but also with a good dose of humility,” Stika said.  “The skill was God given.  The humility was Stan.”

Musial’s grandson, Andrew Edmonds, spoke on behalf of all of Musial’s grandchildren and great grandchildren.  He said everyone was happier after talking with his grandfather, he then told the story of a fan who came up to talk with him during Musial’s public viewing on Thursday this week.

“Tears running down his eyes, he said to me, ‘your grandpa’s best attribute was making nobodies feel like somebodies,” Edmonds said.
