MSD spokesman Lance LeComb says several hundred thousand gallons of sewage have spilled from the broken main. The total size of the spill won't be known until repairs are complete.
The actual repair work will being around midnight Wednesday, and is expected to take four to six hours. If the work cannot be completed tomorrow morning, crews will have to wait until midnight Thusday before resuming work.

Crews with the Metropolitan St. Louis Sewer District are cleaning up yet another sewage spill – this one caused by the break of a pressurized main in Creve Coeur.
Spokesman Lance LeComb says the agency discovered the problem on Sunday night after getting reports of water covering Creve Coeur Mill Road near an MSD pumping station. The break also discharged sewage into nearby drainage ditches.
LeComb says the 42-inch pipe is 5 to 6 feet underground, and repair work could take several days. As a safety precaution, the St. Louis County parks department has blocked off access to some of the walking paths in nearby Creve Coeur Lake Park. MSD has reported this latest discharge to the Missouri Department of Natural Resources.
This is the second spill the agency has had to deal with in three days. On Friday evening, approximately 100 gallons of sewage spilled onto a soccer field at St. Bernadette Catholic School when crews went to clear a blockage from an 8-inch main.
