The Saint Louis Chamber Chorus Explores The Wonder Of Christmas

Philip Barnes conducts the Saint Louis Chamber Chorus in "Wonder Upon Wonder Will Arrive to Me,"
the third concert of the ensemble's 57th season, on Sunday, December 23.  The a cappella chorus will perform three major works to explore the wonder of the mystery of Christ's birth including Spanish Renaissance composer Tomas Luis de Victoria's "Missa O Magnum Mysterium," a series of motets for the Nativity and the Epiphany by French composer Francis Poulenc and another setting of "O Magnum Mysterium" by Sir Maxwell Davies.

The title of the program is inspired by the Emily Dickinson poem, "Before the Ice," which is also the title of a work by English composer Bob Chilcott that will receive its world premiere at the concert.  Chilcott is one of many noted composers who, over the years, have been commissioned by the Saint Louis Chamber Chorus to write works for its repertoire.  Artistic Director Philip Barnes charged Chilcott to combine the poetry of Emily Dickinson with the "O Magnum Mysterium" text in his new work.

The program also includes a favorite setting of "O Magnum Mysterium" by American composer Morten Lauridsen and a series of American carols and anthems.

Philip Barnes was host Steve Potter's guest on "Cityscape" to discuss Sunday's program, the evolution of Chilcott's new work and the remaining concerts in the Saint Louis Chamber Chorus' season.  They also talked about the architecture of Second Presbyterian Church, the location of the concert, as well as the importance of the buildings where the chorus performs.
