Updated at 1:46 p.m. to include Clay/Barton wager.
If you'll pardon the gastronomical puns, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch's Jake Wagman tells us today about a tasty World Series side bet between St. Louis Mayor Francis Slay and Arlington, Texas Mayor Robert Cluck.
St. Louis is, of course, home to the Cardinals and Arlington is the stomping grounds of the Texas Rangers. The teams will face each other in the 2011 World Series beginning Wednesday.
So, what's at stake in the bet?
The Post-Dispatch says that if the Cardinals lose the series, Slay will offer up mostly some St. Louis foodstuffs, with a musical exception, including:
Pi pizza Schlafly beer Pappy's BBQ Gooey butter cake from Park Avenue Coffee Chocolate from Crown Candy Kitchen A CD of the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra
And what will Cluck offer in return? The Post-Dispatch explains:
Keeping with the food theme, Cluck has offered a juicy entree of his own: Nolan Ryan Steaks — "Official Beef of the Texas Rangers" —whose eponymous rancher is the team's Hall of Fame pitcher turned principal owner.
The two mayors aren't the only politicians getting in on the "meaty" betting idea. U.S. Representatives Joe Barton, R-Texas and William Lacy Clay, D-Mo. are also making a wager, according to a release from Clay's office.
In this case, if the Cardinals are the champions, Barton will supply Clay and his staff with a case of Lone Star beer and BBQ brisket from Spring Creek Barbeque in Arlington, Texas. If the reverse is true, and the Rangers take the title, Clay's staff will send Barton and his staff a case of Budweiser beer and deep dish pizza from Pi.
