This article first appeared in the St. Louis Beacon, Feb. 13, 2012 - Avalon Theatre and R-S Theatrics (formerly Soundstage Productions) are bringing down their Crestwood Court curtains with a pair of plays about love and cars.
ArtSpace tenants have until Feb. 28 to move out and make room for the mall's renovation. Beginning Thursday night, Avalon signs off with "Love Letters," a late nod to Valentine's Day, in which a man and woman read each other notes, letters and cards spanning 50 years' worth of ambitions, dreams, successes and disappointments.
On Broadway, the A.R. Gurney play starred the likes of Colleen Dewhurst and Jason Robards, Stockard Channing and John Rubenstein, and Elaine Stritch and Cliff Robertson. The local production pairs up Avalon co-founders Erin Kelley and Larry Mabry.
There's also plenty of love on stage when R-S honks goodbye to ArtSpace with "Autobhan," Neil LaBute's short-cycle presentation of seven plays, all taking place in the front seat of a car.
The Friday through Sunday "Autobahn" presentations portray relationship scenarios ranging from a make-out session gone bad to a daughter's ride home from rehab.
