This article first appeared in the St. Louis Beacon, Nov. 19, 2012 - The Missouri Arts Council today announced the recipients of its 2013 Missouri Arts Awards. In celebrating the awards’ 30-year anniversary, the council named the following individuals and organizations:
Arts Education
St. Louis ArtWorks, a program providing underserved, local teens with paid internships in the arts
Arts Organization
Mount Vernon Regional Arts Council, a volunteer group working to bring festivals, community theater and a new arts/recreation center to the Mount Vernon area
Creative Community
City of Webster Groves, for its public art, galleries, arts education, festivals and performing arts institutions
Individual Artist
Vesta Johnson of Kirkwood, a master fiddler who’s played since 1929 and has performed and taught throughout Missouri and the nation
Leadership in the Arts
Pat Jordan of Kansas City, an advocate of African-American arts, who was instrumental in bringing back the city’s 1912 Gem Theater
