Kirkwood High School Symphonic Orchestra Live At Lincoln Center

For the second time, the Kirkwood High School Symphonic Orchestra is preparing for a trip to New York City.  In March of 2010, the ensemble performed in Carnegie Hall, one of three orchestras invited to do so.  The orchestra has again been honored by its selection to compete in the prestigious National Orchestra Cup on March 2, 2013 in Lincoln Center’s Alice Tully Hall.  The KHS Symphonic Orchestra will compete with several other orchestras from around the county for the title of Grand Champion and the National Cup.

Last May, the students kicked off their “Live at Lincoln Center” fundraising campaign.  So far, their efforts have generated $57,000 of the $78,000 necessary to fund the four-day trip.

Just as was the case with the trip to Carnegie, the orchestra’s fundraising efforts will be bolstered by a benefit concert.  Kirkwood students will be joined by a number of renowned alumni for the “Live from Lincoln Center” Benefit Concert on Dec. 21.

Emmy and Grammy award winner and Broadway producer, orchestrator and recording star John McDaniel will join a number of alums including musical prodigy and cellist Patrice Jackson, siblings Meg, Liz and J Freivogel and the Dickinson Family fiddling group, among others.  The concert concludes with a double bass performance by KHS Symphonic Orchestra Director Patrick Jackson who is also the father of Patrice.

Director Patrick Jackson and Meg Freivogel, violinist in the Jupiter String Quartet, were Steve Potter’s guests on Cityscape today.  They discussed the KHS orchestra program, the opportunities a performance in New York provides for the students, the benefit concert and Meg’s experiences as a student at KHS in Patrick’s program.
