Leonard Slatkin is well known to St. Louis audiences because of his long tenure at the helm of the St. Louis Symphony. He returns to St. Louis to conduct the orchestra in concerts January 18 and 19 in Powell Hall. But before that, he will revisit his Hollywood roots when he appears as pianist, narrator and conductor in a program of music by and about Hollywood film composers and musicians to benefit the Chamber Music Society of St. Louis.
Slatkin is the son of violinist and conductor Felix Slatkin and cellist Eleanor Aller. The elder Slatkin was born in St. Louis and joined the St. Louis Symphony while still a teen. After moving to Los Angeles, he met and married Aller, and the pair were founding members of the famed Hollywood String Quartet. Both Slatkin and Aller performed with Frank Sinatra and forged a friendship that frequently brought the famed singer into the Slatkin home.
The Slatkin/Sinatra collaboration will be explored during the Chamber Music Society’s concert with a special tribute. Also featured on the program are works by John Williams, Franz Waxman, Erich von Korngold, Aaron Copland and others.
Leonard Slatkin and Chamber Music Society of St. Louis Artistic Director and President Marc Gordon were Steve Potter’s guest on “Cityscape” to discuss Slatkin’s St. Louis and Hollywood connections and the “Notes from Hollywood” program.
