A Low Brass Spectacular At The Sheldon

St. Louis Symphony Bass Trombonist Gerry Pagano recognized the need for a forum to provide educational and performance opportunities for trombone, euphonium, baritone horn and tuba players in the St. Louis region, so he formed the Saint Louis Low Brass Collective.  The organization presents its 5th Annual Low Brass Spectacular Gala Concert Tuesday, January 22 at The Sheldon Concert Hall. The musicians will include members of the St. Louis Symphony, the United States Air Force Band of Mid-America, members of the Muny, Fox and Peabody orchestras, faculty members from local universities and high schools as well as select area students. The St. Louis MetroBones, an affiliated organization of the Saint Louis Low Brass Collective, will perform.

In addition to educational and performance opportunities, the Low Brass Collective encourages the composition of new music for low brass.  For the past three years, the organization has commissioned works for the gala concert. Premiering at this year’s gala are works by John E. Cheetham, Professor Emeritus of Music Theory and Composition at the University of Missouri-Columbia, and Matt Harris, Los Angeles jazz pianist, composer and arranger.

St. Louis Symphony Principal Trombonist Tim Myers, trombonist and Director of Bands at St. Charles Community College Dave Dickey and composer John Cheetham were Steve Potter’s guests on “Cityscape.”  They talked about the purpose and activities of the Low Brass Collective, John Cheetham’s new work and the rest of the program for the gala concert.
