This article first appeared in the St. Louis Beacon, March 5, 2013 - The St. Louis Symphony has announced the appointment of Steven Jarvi to be resident conductor, starting with the 2013-14 season.
This season, Jarvi led the St. Louis Symphony Youth Orchestra concert in November. And, according to a press release, “In his new role, he will serve as the YO’s Music Director and also lead various concerts on the St. Louis Symphony’s schedule, including education and family concerts, community concerts and Live at Powell Hall performances.”
The release quotes Music Director David Robertson as saying of Jarvi, “His unique combination of talent, innovation and inspired, infectious music making will be a delight for the Youth Orchestra and an excellent addition to the St. Louis Symphony family."
Jarvi is the music director of Winter Opera St. Louis and was formerly associate conductor of the Kansas City Symphony. Before that he was the conducting fellow at New World Symphony in Miami Beach. He has a bachelor's degree in music theory from the University of Michigan and a master's in orchestral conducting from the Peabody Institute of the Johns Hopkins University.
