It has been a thrilling week for Steven Jarvi. In the same week, he has fulfilled two lifelong dreams. He has been appointed to a job he has dreamed of his whole life and is conducting an opera he has always dreamed of conducting.
The job is Resident Conductor of the St. Louis Symphony and the opera is Puccini’s “Tosca” which Jarvi conducts with Winter Opera Saint Louis in performances March 8 and 10 at Chaminade.
Jarvi officially assumes his position with the St. Louis Symphony September 17 when he will conduct the orchestra in a concert in Forest Park. But he is no stranger to St. Louis or the St. Louis Symphony. He has been the Music Director of Winter Opera Saint Louis since 2010, began conducting the Washington University Symphonic Orchestra in August, 2012 and conducted the St. Louis Symphony Youth Orchestra in its first concert of the current season.
As Resident Conductor, Jarvi will assist Music Director David Robertson as cover conductor and will direct all the Live at Powell concerts as well as the children and young adult concerts. Educating young people is important to Jarvi, so he is particularly looking forward to that aspect of his position. Another highlight is serving as Music Director of the St. Louis Symphony Youth Orchestra and continuing the new initiatives that began this season under Jessica Ingraham’s leadership.
Steven Jarvi was Steve Potter’s guest on “Cityscape” to discuss his new position with the St. Louis Symphony, Winter Opera’s production of “Tosca,” his background, and his impressions of the St. Louis Symphony and the city of St. Louis.
