Florian Schulz: Wildlife Photographer And Conservationist

Florian Schulz has two passions.  He is an award-winning wildlife photographer, but is equally dedicated to preserving the habitat of wildlife.

Schulz’s passions led him to the Arctic where he spent 18 months in search of breathtaking images documenting life in every season.  The result is the book “To the Arctic” which is the companion to the IMAX film of the same name.

In order to capture the best images, Schulz, camped on the frozen ocean of the Arctic.  He also called on the services of an experienced pilot who could bank the plane at just the right angle to capture the perfect shot and then pull out just in time to avoid disaster.

Schulz also has an ongoing project, “Freedom to Roam,” which seeks to preserve wildlife corridors.  “Keeping habitat connected, especially with a changing climate where animals are moving in elevation and also north, we need this more than ever,” he said. “It’s the single most important effort if we want to keep biodiversity around.”

Florian Schulz was in St. Louis to speak at an event sponsored by the St. Louis Zoo, the Academy of Science - St. Louis and the Alaska Wilderness League.  He was Steve Potter’s guest on “Cityscape” to discuss his photography, conservation efforts and his Arctic and Freedom to Roam projects.
