In remembrance of Veteran’s Day, Mustard Seed Theatre is presenting “All is Calm: The Christmas Truce of 1914.” The a cappella musical is based on a true story from the front lines during World War I.
“All the dialogue comes from letters, journals, public records, maybe things that were said on the radio – there’s a line from Winston Churchill and the pope,” said Antonio Rodriguez, one of the ten cast members in the production. “We each have a handful of these lines that we give…It’s really interesting because we have Scots, French soldiers, British soldiers, working class, middle class - we have a very wide range of characters, and so many of us have to play characters with different accents.”
Thanks to music director Joe Schoen, the actor / singers were able to put together the production in three weeks, despite the unusual a cappella format, said artistic director Deanna Jent.
“The story is about hopefulness,” said Rodriguez. “That people can come together and forget all that nastiness.”
It is still relevant today, added Jent, “in the ways that we can see everyone we meet as another human, and not in the categories that we want to immediately put them in.”
