Anthony Dean Griffey Performs Peter Grimes With The St. Louis Symphony

Alex Irvin
Anthony Dean Griffey and Susanna Phillips in a semi-staged performance of "Peter Grimes" at the Aspen Music Festival on July 27, 2013

American tenor Anthony Dean Griffey has performed to great acclaim in opera houses and concert halls around the world.  But when he appears in the title role of the St. Louis Symphony’s concert version of Britten’s opera “Peter Grimes,” it will be another opportunity to sing the role that is near and dear to his heart.  Not only was it his first major role when he first performed it while a student at Tanglewood, but because Griffey grew up as a shy, misunderstood child, he feels a real connection to the character.

Soprano Susanna Phillips appears in the role of Ellen Orford in the St. Louis Symphony’s performance of “Peter Grimes.  She and Griffey are joined by a large group of vocal soloists as well as the St. Louis Symphony and Chorus, all under the direction of David Robertson.  The concert will be performed in Powell Hall on Saturday, November 16 at 8:00 p.m. as a preview to a performance on Friday, November 22 in Carnegie Hall on what would be Britten’s 100th birthday.

St. Louis Public Radio listeners can hear the concert live on Saturday, November 16 at 8:00 p.m. on 90.7, or on the St. Louis Public Radio website.
