In celebration of Black History Month, Christ Church Cathedral is holding a concert Sunday honoring Rosa Parks. The concert will feature arrangements of spirituals and “Hymn for Rosa,” a work written by Christ Church Cathedral organist and choirmaster William “Pat” Partridge after Rosa Parks died.
According to Partridge, her death reminded him of his childhood in segregated Virginia and her perseverance to end segregation.
“Hymn for Rosa” will be performed by guest soloist Angel Riley, 16, who is in the education program at Opera Theatre of Saint Louis with piano accompaniment by Partridge. The Christ Church Cathedral Choir and vocal soloists Allyssa Callaghan, Jeffrey Ballard and Daniel Zipperer are also featured on the program.
A mixed media exhibit featuring photos of African Americans from the 1800s until the 1950s is also on display in the nave of the cathedral through the rest of the month. Church member Deborah Nelson Linck, curator of the Hands on Black History Museum, set up the exhibit.
“I put together frames that kind of tell the story of our history, with the thought that our history looks more like our scrapbooks than it does our tradition history books,” Linck said.
