The Gaslight Cabaret Festival, two months of cabaret performances at the Gaslight Theater, opens next week with a show by Broadway veteran and St. Louis native Ken Page.
Page got his start at the MUNY more than 40 years ago. After two summers performing at the MUNY, he moved to New York City, where he performed on Broadway in the original casts of “Cats,” “Ain't Misbehavin',” “The Wiz”,” Ain't Nothin' But The Blues,” and “Guys & Dolls.” Fans of “The Nightmare Before Christmas” may recognize him as the voice of Mr. Oogie Boogie.
Thursday, February 20 and Friday, February 21, Page will perform “Old, New, Borrowed and Blue,” a cabaret show he debuted last year at 54 Below in New York. The show includes a mix of Broadway tunes and Blues songs, and reflects more of Page’s personality than a play or musical would.
“The level of intimacy with cabaret is the key,” Page said. “To the audience…I say come to relax and have a good time and be in my living room with me, that’s how I think of it.”
Other performers at the Gaslight Festival include Marissa Mulder, Emily Bergl, Lara Teeter, Ken Haller and many more.
“We’re presenting an extended season over 8 or 9 weeks, we are bringing in several people from New York, but we’re also presenting some of the best of St. Louis grown, homegrown, talent. And we’re putting them all together on the same stage,” festival producer Jim Dolan said.
