Cinema St. Louis’ 2014 St. Louis Filmmaker's Showcase kicks off Sunday, July 13, and runs through Thursday, July 17.
Each year, Cinema St. Louis gets about 120 submissions from both professional and amateur filmmakers. Chris Clark, artistic director of the organization, says the most important criteria is whether the filmmakers have told a good story and told it in a cohesive way.
Some of the films featured will be chosen by the staff to continue onto the St. Louis International Film Festival. At the closing party at Blueberry Hill on Thursday night, Cinema St. Louis will announce which films they choose, as well as awards from the documentary and narrative jury. “I usually give goofy trinkets that are somewhere on my cabinet in my office,” said Clark.
The showcase only allows films made by people who currently live in St. Louis or St. Louis expatriates.
Eric Wilkinson, media developer at the Missouri History Museum and director of "A Portrait of St. Louis at 250 Years" has perhaps the most St. Louis connected film.
“We created this film as part of our 250 in 250 exhibit,” said Wilkinson. “We really wanted to do more than just show shots of the city of St. Louis. We really wanted to show what it’s like to live, work and play.”
Mike Rohlfing is the director of “EVT” which was produced as an entry in the 48 Hour Film Project. “It was my team’s 10th year competing, so we wanted to do something special,” said Rohlfing. What they came up with was a horror/thriller film about a man who is forced to attend a unique and disturbing virtual reality therapy session. The film was shot mainly in St. Louis, but they also had people from throughout the country contribute.
“I enjoy [being a filmmaker in St. Louis]. It’s a small enough town, I can get around and find some great people to help out,” said Rohlfing.
Rohlfing’s film will be shown on July 14th and Wilkinson’s will be shown on July 17th.
