Actor Martin Sheen will kick off this year’s St. Louis Speaker Series on Oct. 7.

“I’m going to reflect on my career as an actor, but also as an activist, as a husband, a father, a grandfather,” Sheen said.

On-screen, Sheen is well-known for “Apocalypse Now,” “Badlands” and “The West Wing.” Producer Alex Heuer talked to Sheen on the 15th anniversary of the debut of “The West Wing.”

Off-screen, Sheen is a well-known activist. He said his top issue is the environment.

“Without a clean environment, we have a very dicey future,” Sheen said. “And that involves all of us, whether we’re Democrats or Republicans, rich or poor, black or white, young or old. We inherit the same planet, we breathe the same air and our children are going to get what we leave them. Nothing could be more important.”

While in St. Louis next month, though, Sheen said he expects to talk about a wide range of topics.

“Mostly, I think I’m going to reflect on 74 years being a member of the human race and how much I have to give thanks and praise for, and I hope along the way I can have a few laughs and meet some people there that I can share some thoughts with.”
