The St. Louis Chamber Chorus presents the sixth and final concert of its season "Progressions" on Sunday, May 28th at 3pm. This "progression," called "Death to Life", has a "Requiem" at its core, one written expressly for the Chorus by Sasha Johnson Manning. Beginning in 1998, Sasha composed each movement over an eight-year period, selecting texts from both sacred and secular sources. These include Latin prayers, a Spanish poem by St. John of the Cross, and poems by Emily Dickinson and Walt Whitman. Each text and movement makes use of different timbres of the choir, from a separate chorus for high and low voices, to a combination of these forces in a double choir movement. Those familiar with the Chorus know that Sasha was our first Composer-In-Residence, serving from 1998-2006. Sasha will fly here from her home in the UK for the performance, which will be perfectly suited to the resonance of St. Margaret of Scotland Church in the North Tower Grove neighborhood. The performance will also feature several pieces that explore man’s quest for a savior, both religious and political, with pieces by Thomas Tallis, Frederick Ouseley, Kerensa Briggs and Melissa Dunphy.
