Edwardsville, Ill. – Faculty at Southern Illinois University in Edwardsville have overwhelmingly voted to join a union.
The university's nontenure-track professors voted Monday and Tuesday. By a 78-31 vote, they approved joined the Illinois Education Association.
Those who voted to unionize say the drive has to do with equal treatment for the growing number of nontenure-track professors. They say teachers want equal treatment in pay, benefits and job security.
SIUE spokesman Greg Conroy says vote was not unexpected, noting the university was neutral in the vote.
The university has 2,300 faculty, administrators and staff.
