Washington – Former U.S. Senator John Danforth says a conservative push to ban same-sex marriage through a constitutional amendment is silly.
The Missouri Republican and Episcopal priest calls it the latest example of how the political influence of evangelical Christians is hurting the GOP.
Danforth made the comments in a speech Saturday to the Log Cabin Republicans. The group supports gay rights.
He said history has shown that attempts to regulate human behavior with constitutional amendments are misguided.
Danforth said Prohibition was such a flop that it was repealed 13 years later.
