The Chesterfield Valley could see two new outlet malls by next fall. Taubman Prestige Outlets began construction today, just two weeks after St. Louis Premium Outlets broke ground on its project less than a mile away. Prestige Outlet Malls broke ground across highway 40 from the Chesterfield Commons and construction on St. Louis Premium Outlets is occurring near the Daniel Boone Bridge.
If both outlet malls are built, Chesterfield will have three malls within six miles: two outlet malls in the Valley and also the Chesterfield Mall. Chesterfield Mayor Bruce Geiger previously told St. Louis Public Radio he believed two outlet malls could not survive in the area.
At least nine of the stores Taubman announced would be included in the new mall are also being touted by St. Louis Premium Outlets, including Jones New York, Maidenform, Famous Footwear, Hot Topic, Sunglass Hut, Naturalizer, Brooks Brothers, Nine West and Carter’s.

At today's groundbreaking ceremony, Taubman Chief Operating Officer Bill Taubman made it clear he was not concerned about the competition from a second outlet mall.
“They [St. Louis Premium Outlets] will be substantially behind us, and they will then need to make a decision if they want to build the second project in the market. I know we're going to build, we're going to be ahead, and we're going to be extremely successful,” Taubman said.
Taubman adds that his outlet will not significantly impact business for its neighbor, Chesterfield Mall. He says Chesterfield has a “different type of store, so [the two malls] can easily co-exist,” but did not address the overlap in stores between Taubman Prestige Outlets and St. Louis Premium Outlets.
Taubman expects the project will bring 750 construction jobs and 1,200 permanent jobs to Chesterfield.
