St. Louisans team up with Off-Broadway to support same-sex marriage

This article first appeared in the St. Louis Beacon, Nov. 4, 2011 - The right of same-sex couples to say "I do" gets a boost from theater in a free event that links St. Louis to New York and 25 other states as well as several other countries including Australia.

A reading of "Standing On Ceremony: The Gay Marriage Plays" will be performed Monday night at the Focal Point in Maplewood. Directed by Shakespeare Festival's Rick Dildine, "Standing" is a collection of eight short plays examining marriage and relationships. They include "Strange Fruit" by Neil LaBute, "The Gay Agenda" by Paul Rudnik and "London Mosquitoes by Moises Kaufman.

The performances by 40 theater companies around the country take place in tandem with the Off-Broadway premiere of the play at New York's Minetta Theatre.

All donations in St. Louis and elsewhere will benefit marriage equality organizations.
