A baby kangaroo has begun poking her head out from her mother's pouch at the Saint Louis Zoo.
The female Matschie's tree kangaroo was born six months ago. Hidden in the pouch, she has grown from the size of a lima bean to the size of a small cat.
She is named "Nokopo" after a village in Papua New Guinea, an island just north of Australia and the only place where this endangered species is found.
As its name suggests, the Matschie's tree kangaroo is a strong climber, spending most of its time up in the treetops of its mountainous rainforest home. This relative of the larger terrestrial kangaroo has retained its ability to jump and can leap to the ground from as high as 30 feet.
The best times to see the new "joey," as baby kangaroos are known, is during its mom's daily feeding sessions at 10:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. in the Emerson Children's Zoo.
