The Environmental Protection Agency will hold another community meeting on Tuesday evening, to talk about the cleanup of the former Carter Carburetor plant in north St. Louis.
This is the third community meeting the EPA has held to discuss the cleanup.
The EPA is currently in negotiations with the plant’s former owner, ACF Industries, about how to go about dealing with the asbestos, PCBs and other industrial contaminants at the Carter Carburetor Superfund site.
EPA spokesperson Chris Whitley says people have strong feelings about how the contamination should be addressed, and the meeting is a chance for everyone to voice their concerns.
“There will be representatives, several representatives there from EPA,” Whitley said. “We anticipate there will also be representatives from legislative offices, representatives for local elected officials as well, typically that’s what we’ve had for the audience. And of course neighborhood residents as well.”
Whitley says in previous meetings, residents have raised a wide range of issues: “Why is the process taking so long, what all is involved, or would be involved, in a cleanup, will there be opportunities for minority interests, contractors, or laborers, to work on the cleanup, exactly what is this legal process that you’re going through at EPA to make this happen.”
The public meeting will be held Tuesday night from 7:00 to 9:00 at the Herbert Hoover Boys & Girls Club on North Grand Avenue, across the street from Carter Carburetor.
Whitley says additional meetings will be held in the future.
