St. Louis, MO – St. Louis Police Chief Joe Mokwa is trying to figure out what to do with 48 police positions. He says planned federal cuts may mean not replacing some officers when they retire.
The COPS (Community Oriented Policing Services) program that started in the 1990s paid the four dozen officers' salaries, but it was never meant to be a permanent funding source.
It would cost $1 million to keep the officers employed without the federal money next year.
