Orangutan Born at St. Louis Zoo

By AP/KWMU

St. Louis – The St. Louis Zoo's latest addition is a baby Sumatran orangutan.

The 35-year-old mother, Merah, gave birth at 1:30 Tuesday afternoon. Both mother and baby were fine. The baby's sex is not yet known.

Both animals are on display at the zoo's Jungle of the Apes.

It will be about a year before the baby and mother can be separated for veterinarians to determine paternity through DNA tests.

But Junior, a 41-year-old male, has been protective of the mother and child since birth, keepers said.

Zoo officials say orangutans are endangered due to habitat loss, as global demand for cheap lumber has caused deforestation.
