St. Louis, MO – St. Louis County election officials have approved a ballot question for November. It will ask voters whether they should approve using any public money for stadiums.
But it's not clear whether the ballot question will apply to current construction of a new Cardinals ballpark. The county sold bonds to raise $46 million in cash for the park.
Some lawyers say bond payments on that $46 million are already locked in.
But supporters of the ballot question say it would force the county to get voter approval each time the county wants to make a payment on the bond's principle and interest.
Fred Lindecke, with the Coalition Against Public Funding for Stadiums, said in a statement that it's an opportunity "for the citizens of St. Louis County to save $100 million dollars."
