Springfield, Ill – Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich said today he will push for legislation that would make it a misdemeanor to sell or rent mature video games to children younger than 18.

The Illinois Retail Merchants Association is criticizing the governor's proposal. The group says that it would force retailers to do what parents should be doing.

Illinois law currently doesn't prohibit selling or renting video games to children, regardless of how violent or sexually explicit the software may be.

Under the governor's plan, those violating the proposed ban could face a year in prison or a five-thousand-dollar fine.
