East St. Louis, Ill. – The Schnucks grocery store in East St. Louis scheduled to close at the end of the year will remain open for the moment.
The store had been slated to close in October, then December 31, but spokeswoman Lori Willis says the company was able to negotiate cheaper rent.
Now Willis says local officials are coming up with ideas to help the company; such as a special tax district.
"We are still waiting to see the final plans from some of the developers, key community leaders, and I know the officials of East St. Louis are working very, very hard to put some things together," Willis said.
Earlier this fall union workers agreed to take a pay cut to help keep the business open. Those employees have entered into a profit sharing agreement with the company.
