St. Louis – The St. Louis Board of Aldermen Friday approved a bill that would let city voters decide on a major change to the city's recall process.
Lawmakers want to limit to six months the time recall organizers may gather petition signatures. Now, there is no time limit.
Alderwoman Jennifer Florida was one of the bill's sponsors. She said there has been too much abuse under the current law.
"Rather than it being a matter of ethics, or a person not serving, or a disgruntled constituency, it was a matter of 'you won, we lost, so we're going after you,' Or 'we don't agree with you special interest, so we're going to take you out,'" Florida said.
But Alderman Bill Waterhouse said the bill doesn't go far enough. He said it would still be too easy for an ousted official to run again for his or her seat.
Waterhouse recently one a three-way election to replace Tom Bauer, whom voters removed from office in September.
If Mayor Slay signs the bill, the matter will go before voters in April.
