KDHX considered 'at risk;' in line for $240k grant

By Adam Allington, KWMU

St. Louis, MO – St. Louis's community radio station, KDHX,is a contender for a substantial grant to help "at risk" radio stations.

The Corporation for Public Broadcasting is issuing five of the grants, each totaling $240,000.

KDHX is not "at risk" in the sense that they might have to shut down. The denotion comes from that fact that, according to the CPB, the station should have more listeners.

Bev Hacker, KDHX's executive director, says because the station broadcasts and eclectic format they simply don't garner the same listenership as other metro stations.

Hacker hopes the $240,000 grant might help change that: "There's some things we can definitely do, for instance, when we talk to our listeners and say how did you hear about us, they say word of mouth or just stumbled on you, because we don't do any marketing.

"So, certainly there's an area we know we can improve."

KDHX is one of 10 finalists competing for five grants being funded through CPB's $1.8 million Station Renewal Project.
