Kansas City, MO. – A federal jury in Kansas City has convicted a Kansas woman accused of strangling an expectant mother and cutting the baby from her body.
Lisa Montgomery was convicted of kidnapping resulting in death in the December 2004 attack on 23-year-old Bobbie Jo Stinnett in the northwest Missouri town of Skidmore.
Jurors deliberated for about four hours Monday before rejecting Montgomery's insanity defense.
Prosecutors plan to seek the death penalty.
Defense attorneys claimed Montgomery was suffering from a condition that causes a woman to falsely believe she is pregnant and show outward signs of pregnancy.
Prosecutors called the claim "voodoo science."
The defense also argued that Montgomery had been abused in childhood.
Prosecutors said Montgomery was cold and calculated and plotted the slaying and abduction.
