St. Louis, MO – The St. Louis Board of Alderman passed an ordinance on Friday giving more priority to cyclists and pedestrians on city streets.
The "Complete Streets" bill is sponsored by 25th Ward Alderman Shane Cohn. He says it will create a checklist that the city will have to follow on all new development projects.
"Basically what its fixing is the accessibility of our streets to pedestrians bikes and buses," says Cohn. "Right now St. Louis City is very much auto-centric in its street design. So what it does put in place design standards that reflect the needs of the entire community."
Dozens of other cities have adopted the Complete Streets program, including Chicago, Seattle, Charlotte, NC.
The St. Louis bicycle and pedestrian advocacy group, Trailnet, has been working on implementing the program in St. Louis for several years.
