Republican leaders of the Missouri General Assembly are criticizing Democratic Governor Jay Nixon’s decision to exclude land assemblage tax credits from the special session planned for next month.

In a letter to Nixon, House Speaker Steven Tilley (R, Perryville) and Senate President Pro-tem Rob Mayer (R, Dexter) said that his “personal agenda against an individual developer (Paul McKee)...has no place in this debate and should not impact the overall priority of tax credit reform.”Tilley and Mayer also called on the governor to set an actual date for the special session so lawmakers can make plans to leave their day jobs and families for the duration. In response, Nixon spokesman Scott Holste issued the following statement:

“As we finalize the language of the call, we are working directly with members in both the House and the Senate with policy expertise to ensure that we have a crisp and focused special session to pass legislation to create jobs, finance disaster recovery and ensure that taxpayer dollars are invested responsibly. Every week spent in a special session has a significant cost to taxpayers, so we want to make sure the General Assembly can complete its work in the most efficient and effective manner possible. We are on track to begin the special session in early September.”
