As Democratic Governor Jay Nixon prepares to call lawmakers back to Jefferson City for a special session, the top Republican in the Missouri Senate wants disaster relief to be one of the issues included in the call.
“I’m willing to do what I need to do to make certain that that is a part of (the) special session," said President Pro-tem Rob Mayer (R, Dexter), "whether that means sitting down with the governor and talking with him about that, along with (House) Speaker (Steven) Tilley." (R, Perryville)
Nixon initially called for lawmakers to address tax credit reform, and later added moving the presidential primary from February to March to the agenda. He has also said levee repair and other disaster needs should be included.
“It is important that we do include those areas (of Missouri) struck by natural disasters, what the degree of assistance is that we need to provide, and help those areas get back up on their feet," Mayer said.
A date for the special session hasn’t been set yet, but a spokesman for Nixon places the target date for early September.
