News surfaced Monday that radio commentator Rush Limbaugh is to be inducted this year in the Hall of Famous Missourians at the Missouri state Capitol. Now, Democrats in the Missouri House of Representatives have sent a letter to House Speaker Steven Tilley asking that the plans to induct Limbaugh be "abandoned."
The letter says that "Fame alone has never been considered sufficient to earn someone a place in the Hall of Famous Missourians" and that, if that were the case, "outlaws Frank and Jesse James - two of the most famous Missourians of all time - would have been inducted long ago."
The conservative commentator has been under fire for calling a Georgetown University law student a “slut” and a “prostitute” on his nationally-syndicated show last week. House Member Sara Lampe (D, Springfield) says just because someone is famous doesn’t mean they should be honored as an outstanding Missourian.
“We have boys and girls in this Capitol every day, and they go through that Hall of Fame and look at all the people that are represented there," Lampe said. "It will be embarrassing for us to have this gentleman in our Hall of Fame.”
Lampe also says she hopes Governor Jay Nixon (D) will forbid Limbaugh’s bust from being displayed in the Hall if he is inducted. The Hall of Famous Missourians is located in the Third Floor Rotunda of the State Capitol.
