Every week, St. Louis Public Radio's Chris McDaniel, Jo Mannies and Jason Rosenbaum talk about the week’s politics. This week the trio discusses the last-minute money surge to the state’s primary candidates, as well as key races in St. Louis.
The Politically Speaking crew also talked about U.S. Sen. Claire McCaskill’s big donation to the state Democratic Party and what it means for state legislative contests in the fall.
On the show:
- Jo talked about the surge of cash to the candidates for St. Louis County executive, including how retired financer Rex Sinquefield donated $50,000 to St. Louis County Executive Charlie Dooley and $100,000 to House Budget Chairman Rick Stream.
- All three discussed the possible implications of crossover voting for the GOP county executive contest. If more Republicans take Democratic ballots to vote for Dooley or Councilman Steve Stenger, it may affect the outcome of the race between Stream and Green Park Alderman Tony Pousosa.
- Jo discussed McCaskill’s $240,000 donation to the state Democratic Party. It came after both McCaskill and Attorney General Chris Koster talked about the need to do better in state legislative contests.
- Chris spoke about the strange contest to become St. Louis’ recorder of deeds. It includes former Recorder of Deeds Sharon Carpenter facing off against Ed McFowland and Jimmie Matthews in the Democratic primary. It also features current Recorder of Deeds Jennifer Florida running as an independent.
- Jason talked about the compelling race in the 76th state House District between state Rep. Joshua Peters, D-St. Louis, and Chris Carter, Sr. It’s a race that could have wide-ranging implications for St. Louis’ political scence.
