Brian Fletcher served as Ferguson's mayor from 2005 to 2011. He died earlier this month.

Ferguson isn’t giving its residents too much time to apply for a vacant city council seat.

When Councilman Brian Fletcher died earlier this month, it left a vacancy for a Ward 2 seat that isn’t up for election until 2018. The city says residents have until 5 p.m. on Friday to apply for the position.

Ferguson’s charter states that councilmembers other than the mayor will fill Fletcher’s vacancy. If someone isn’t appointed to the seat within 30 days, the mayor gets to pick Fletcher’s replacement.

The person who succeeds Fletcher on the council will serve out a term that ends in April 2018. A city press release suggested that interested applicants go to Ferguson's website for more information.

Before being elected to the council last year, Fletcher served two terms as Ferguson’s mayor. He defeated Bob Hudgins in a contest for an open seat, one of three city council contests that gained national attention in the wake of Michael Brown’s shooting death.
