Jazz Unlimited for August 7, 2016 will be “The Career of Louis Hayes.” Drummer Louis Hayes was born in Detroit in 1937 to a musical family and was leading a group in Detroit clubs by age 16. During his 60-year performing career, he distinguished distinguished himself with long tenures with the groups of Horace Silver, Cannonball Adderley, Oscar Peterson, McCoy Tyner and Woody Shaw. He also free-lanced in studios as well as leading his own groups. We will hear him with Grant Green, Nancy Wilson, James Clay, Sonny Clark, Nat Adderley, Victor Feldman, Phineas Newborn, Jr., John Coltrane, Dexter Gordon, Joe Henderson and a group with alto saxophonists Phil Woods, Gene Quill , Sahib Shihab and Hal Stein as well as with the aforementioned leaders.
